President-elect Donald Trump spent the weekend deriding the Broadway show Hamilton on Twitter after the audience booed the arrival of Vice President-elect Mike Pence and the cast asked him to “work on behalf of all of us.” Trump tweeted that the “theater must always be a safe and special place,” though he ridiculed the notion of political correctness throughout his campaign. As a member of Congress, Pence supported conversion therapy, and as governor of Indiana, he passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act and tried to make it a felony for same-sex couples to marry. That he deserves a “safe” space when addressed by a cast of LGBTQ actors and people of color is a fundamental misunderstanding of such spaces for and by certain communities. The past few years have seen the demise of publications and bars for and by lesbian, bisexual, trans and queer women. Historically, these media outlets and brick-and-mortar businesses were both figurative and literal spaces to find community, physical safety and fight for queer rights when we couldn’t find solace elsewhere. Earlier this year, the website AfterEllen effectively shutdown at the behest of straight men at the site’s parent company, while San Francisco’s beloved Lexington Club shut its doors in 2014. You know it, you love it, now get to meet the stars and director of Desert Hearts this Saturday night! Following a 30th anniversary screening of this ground breaking film at the Museum of Modern Art, stars Helen Shaver and Patricia Charbonneau, along with director Donna Deitch, are coming to Henrietta Hudson for an after party celebration. At a time when lesbians were hardly portrayed at all in cinema, and rarely in a positive way, Desert Hearts came along to shine a light on the beauty of love between two women. It went on to inspire later works and paved the way for more mainstream representation of female love stories. Be a part of celebrating this legacy only at HHNY tonight at 9pm!
