Someone’s decision to change their gender is very complex for many people to wrap their heads around. It raises a host of questions.

But for those whose internal gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth, they feel imprisoned in a body that’s not their own. They feel insecure about their bodies, and are sick of living a lie, of not being happy and fulfilled.

Despite the stigma surrounding the transgender community, after much soul-searching, countless people have chosen to take on the journey to reinvent themselves. A 2011 report from the Williams Institute estimates that there are nearly 700,000 transgender people in the US.

For a female who identifies as male, this transition can include a number of options, including  hormone replacement therapy (HRT), top surgery (having their breasts removed), or sex reassignment surgery. FTM is shorthand for transitioning from “female to male.”

The brave souls featured in the pictures below were all born female, but now identify as hot men.
